Physical Exam Questions

How long is a DOT medical card valid?

A DOT medical card is typically valid for up to 24 months. However, certain health conditions, like diabetes or high blood pressure may result in a shorter certification period, requiring more frequent exams.

Commercial drivers are typically required to have a DOT physical exam every 24 months. However, some medical conditions may require more frequent exams.

A DOT physical exam includes a review of your medical history, a physical examination, vision and hearing tests, blood pressure and pulse rate check, and a urine test for diabetes or other medical conditions.

A DOT physical exam usually takes between 30 to 45 minutes.

  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Medical/clearance paperwork for any chronic conditions or significant medical disorders such as diabetes, cardiac, sleep apnea or mental illness.
  • List of all current medications
  • SPE Certificate if applicable
  • Hearing aids if required
  • Glasses or contacts if required
  • Loose fitting clothing

To pass a DOT physical exam, drivers must meet specific health criteria, including acceptable vision and hearing levels, controlled blood pressure. No use of illegal drugs is acceptable and all prescribed medication should be accompanied by your PCP’s information.

No, a drug test is not part of your official DOT physical and not required to obtain your medical card. A urinalysis is performed to check for blood, diabetes and kidney function. If a drug test is required, it is requested separately by the employer.

Can I take a DOT physical exam if I have high blood pressure?

Yes, drivers with high blood pressure can still take a DOT physical exam. Depending on your blood pressure level, you may be issued a temporary medical card and required to manage your condition.

If you have sleep apnea, you must provide documentation showing that your condition is being effectively managed. Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) compliance may be required to pass the DOT physical exam.
